Physical Health Exams

Parents naturally want the best for their children. This starts with monitoring their growth and development to make sure that they remain healthy and well.  At Hawaii Pediatrics, our qualified and caring team is committed to helping families promote optimal health with preventive care, like regular physical exams.

Importance of Scheduling Pediatric Physicals

The importance of scheduling regular pediatric physicals cannot be overstated. This proactive service is essential for monitoring growth and development, delivering vaccinations, and ensuring that children are ready to attend school, participate in sports programs, and/or safely attend summer camp.

Physicals also provide opportunities to catch and address potential health problems early on. We understand that it can be difficult for busy parents to set aside time for annual doctor visits. You may not even think about it until your child comes down with the sniffles or suffers from an injury that requires professional medical attention.

However, when you commit to scheduling annual pediatric physicals, you ensure that your kids will be fully ready for school, sports, and camp. You’ll gain insight into their individual growth and development and provide the proactive monitoring necessary to pave the way for a healthy, happy life.

Types of Physicals We Offer in Honolulu

Annual physical exams are intended to monitor health over time in order to track growth and development, while also watching for warning signs of potential health disorders.

However, children may also need specific types of physicals to attend school or participate in activities like sports or camp. Hawaii Pediatrics is pleased to offer a range of services that are designed to meet your family’s needs.

School Physicals

Every child grows and develops at his/her own rate. Scheduling an annual school physical not only allows your pediatrician to chart your child’s progress each year, but it provides the opportunity for parents (and children, as they get older) to ask questions and better understand individual health.

In order to attend school, children are required to keep up on a vaccination schedule. Physicals are also a chance for your pediatrician to review past exams and compare results to new data, such as:

  • Height and weight
  • Muscle development
  • Heart rate and blood pressure
  • Visual acuity
  • Hearing
  • Neurological function
  • and more

During the examination, we check the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, as well as the lymph nodes and skin. We monitor these areas to ensure that there are no signs of inflammation, infection, or other potential problems. We also examine the joints, heart, lungs, abdomen, and spine to ensure good health and proper development.

For young children, a school physical focuses largely on growth and development. As children get older and enter into adolescence, they may also have social and psychological concerns related to physical changes, which we are happy to discuss so that kids can understand that these changes are normal.

The health, safety, and wellbeing of your children is our top concern. Scheduling an annual school physical not only ensures that kids are ready to head to the classroom, but also provides ongoing opportunities to monitor growth and development and address concerns as they arise.

Sports Physicals

Any child entering a sports program will likely be required to complete a physical exam beforehand to make sure that they are in good health and qualified to participate.

In truth, many kids are active and athletic anyway, so it’s a good idea to schedule a sports or other physical exam annually. The friendly and accommodating team at Hawaii Pediatrics is happy to help.

In our office, a sports physical includes everything that we do for school physicals.  However, we will evaluate the ability to participate in a given sport and address any issues or concerns that would be relevant. We will check for any signs of illness or injury that could impact your child’s ability to safely participate so that we can address these issues before they get started with a sports program.

Camp Physicals

Not all camps require a physical, but it’s always a good idea to have your child examined prior to attending camp. Similar to a sports physical, a camp physical is intended to determine whether your child is healthy and fit to participate in common camp activities like running, swimming, sports, and more.

This physical includes many of the same elements as a sports physical. While sports physicals typically aim to ensure that your child is prepared for a specific, intensive activity, camp activities tend to be more general.

Keep in mind that sports and camp physicals are performed in a similar manner to a school or annual wellness physical.  Therefore, one physical exam will be sufficient to meet all the other needs.  We are happy to complete all of the required forms for clearance for school, sports, and/or camp.

Adoption Placement Exam in Hawaii

Adopting a child is a gift, as well as a responsibility. When you bring an infant, toddler, child, or adolescent into your home and make them part of your family, you become their primary caregiver, so it’s important to understand their health and wellness needs. This is the purpose of a placement exam.

Honolulu adoption placement physicals are intended to help you understand and address the healthcare needs of your adoptive child. At Hawaii Pediatrics, we have the expertise to deliver the comprehensive information you need. A placement exam starts with reviewing medical history through past medical records.

Next, there will be a physical examination and diagnostic testing to determine current health status and pinpoint potential problem areas. This may include different types of testing for different age groups, depending on developmental and behavioral stages.

Finally, we will compare current evaluations to past records and consider prior living conditions in order to deliver a comprehensive assessment and create a plan for optimal health and wellness moving forward.
